Ozymandias was once a badass, but now he's nothing. The only reason the narrator knows about him is because of the "traveller". Since the statue is unknown to most, Ozymandias is also unknown to most. Also, the statue is in the middle of nowhere, which let's you know two things: the city he used to rule is also gone, and that very few people will ever see the statue. All that's left of him is this statue, and the statue is broken and pretty lame now. He was a powerful leader of an ancient civilization. So here's the basic breakdown: Ozymandias used to be a pretty big deal. Sound familiar? The Gus thing is not really related to Ozymandias, just a cool visual similarity to Walt. ("Visage" means face, I had to look it up too, no shame in that.) So his face is half-buried in the sand. Like, at this point, it's just two legs sticking out of the sand and the head (and likely torso) are just laying, half-buried, near by. That much is clear from the inscription on the pedestal of the statue:īut we're seeing Ozymandias and his story through the point of view of the narrator, who is seeing it through the point of view of the traveler, who is seeing through this statue. He was a major badass, or, at the very least, he thought of himself that way, so he had this statue made of him to let everyone know what a badass he was. So basically, Ozymandias was a big time leader of the ancient world, probably an Egyptian pharaoh or something similar (he may be real or fictional, but it's not important for what we're talking about).
